It helps town officials to know that their constituents will appreciate town support for 20% by 2010.

The SmartPower 20% by 2010 Clean Energy Campaign is our challenge to cities and towns, faith communities, colleges and universities and businesses to start using clean energy.  Through the 20% by 2010 campaign we will help to prove to all Connecticut citizens – and to the nation- that clean energy is real, its here and its working.

The SmartPower 20% by 2010 clean energy campaign is becoming one of the quickest and easiest ways for cities and towns to become true leaders in building a voluntary clean energy market.  When a city or town commits to the SmartPower 20% by 2010 clean energy campaign, it sends a strong signal to the market that we need clean energy for the long term.

Your commitment helps build the voluntary clean energy market today.  Among the many benefits of clean energy to your community are:

Clean energy promotes good health by reducing the risk of asthma, heart disease and other medical problems associated with burning fossil fuels (i.e., coal, oil and natural gas.)
Clean energy also protects the environment by producing little or no toxic emissions that contribute to acid rain, ozone smog and global warming and by avoiding contamination to land and water caused by mining, drilling and transporting hazardous materials.
Clean energy can benefit the economy by creating local jobs, income and revenues and serving as a hedge against rising electricity prices.
Clean energy also promotes national security by diversifying our fuel sources and energy infrastructure

Dear [town authority]:

I wanted to take a quick opportunity to draw your attention to a pivotal new program that is available in our town, the SmartPower 20% by 2010 campaign. We now have an opportunity to help create cleaner air, a healthier community and true energy independence by supporting clean energy - electricity from wind, sun, water and other non-polluting, renewable sources.

The town can do its part by joining the SmartPower 20% by 2010 Clean Energy Campaign. Once the town makes a commitment to use clean energy for 20% of its electricity demand by 2010, it can qualify for a free solar energy system from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund. The final step would be to achieve a minimum number of residential signups for clean energy. Specifically, for every 100 local customers who sign up for the CTCleanEnergyOptionsSM program that is now offered by CL&P; and United Illuminating we would automatically get a FREE PV panel placed on town property. My household has already signed up. For more information on these programs, please visit:
www.ctcleanenergyoptions.com and www.ctcleanenergy.com/communities

Let's make our town a Clean Energy Community! Thank you very much.

Very truly yours,
