Town Description:

New Hartford was founded as a part of the "Western grant" conveyed in 1686 to the proprietors of Hartford and Windsor. In May, 1733, a committee of Hartford proprietors requested the General Court to encourage the settlement of the town. Incorporated in 1738, an act was passed naming it "New Hartford." It was the only one of seven towns in the division which was colonized by Hartford proprietors or their sons. All were from well-to-do families, hence the propriety of the name "New Hartford."

New Hartford’s form of government is a board of selectmen with the highest elected official being the first selectman. The board of selectmen have regular meetings on the first Monday of the month at 5:30 and on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 PM. Meetings are open to the public and citizens are encouraged to participate.
