20% by 2010 Clean Energy Campaign Progress:

The Town of Canton uses 3,300,000 kwh of electricity per year for all municipal facilities. Therefore, their 20% clean energy use target is 660,000 kwh in 2010. To date, they have met approximately 8.0% of that goal through the mandatory amount as required by the state Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). Canton has yet to make a voluntary clean energy purchase.

Town Description:

The Town of Canton is located on U.S. Routes 44 and 202 in the Farmington Valley, 14 miles west of Hartford, Connecticut. Hooray for Clean Energy - Letter to the Editor    Thursday September 1st, 2005

"It is incumbent upon communities to embrace alternative forms of energy as evidenced by the rising gas costs. If all of us [support clean energy], it can make a big difference. I'm glad to see we're moving forward in a positive direction. "
Mary Tomolonius
First Selectman of Canton
"We are fortunate to live in Connecticut because we can now sign up for the 100% clean energy option through our utilities! It is easy and only adds about $5.50 to $5.75 per month for the average residential customer. If everyone signed up, the benefits for our health, for the land, for animals and for plants would be enormous. Such a change would also address the global warming issue. Please take the time now...if you have not go to and sign up with Sterling Planet or Community Energy "

"I am so excited to know that when I buy clean energy, I am helping my town, too! Just think how much money Canton will save (and our taxes) when they start to receive a free solar photovoltaic panel for every 100 of us who sign up. "
