Town Description:

Bridgeport is on the Pequonnock River and Long Island Sound.

The community was named for the first drawbridge over the river.

P.T. Barnum and Tom Thumb are buried here. Barnum served as mayor of Bridgeport.

The city has lost much of its old industrial base in recent decades. The site of a factory complex that once made valves and meters is now occupied by Harbor Yard Ballpark, which opened in 1998.
