Teaching and Leading by Example

Talcott Mountain Science Center and Day School in Avon is dedicated to the improvement of science education for students and teachers.  With this overriding commitment, the Science Center has become a leader in energy education and is working with the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund and other science institutions across the State to provide a unified message on alternative energy and climate change.  Activities include the development of meaningful displays and engaging activities for students and visitors. Participants will come to see clean energy displays, examples of active and passive energy systems and to talk with the professionals who helped to make this a reality.  The clean energy systems at the Center and School are part of a concerted effort to provide environmentally friendly alternatives for energy and set an example for the entire region

Meteorology Lab

The Meteorology Lab supports an array of 54 solar photovoltaic panels which produces 9,000 watts peak power. Through net metering, excess power is fed to the electrical grid and is exchanged for power on cloudy days or at night. In addition to the CCEF, support has been provided by the McPhee Foundation, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, VanZelm Engineers, Xantrex Technology Inc. and Sharp Electronics Corp.  The solar array was installed by Sunsearch.

Chronobiology & Alternative Energy Center

The Chronobiology & Alternative Energy Center has many passive solar design features, such as south fenestration, summer shading, wind shielding and high thermal mass.  The 68 Sharp U175 panels are supported on the steel superstructure of the upper roof, producing 11,000 peak watts. Through net metering, excess power is fed to the electrical supply grid and is exchanged for power on cloudy days or at night.
