Playing an Important Role
Westport Country Playhouse, a high-profile theatre in operation since 1931, has gone green. As part of the theatre’s $22 million renovation and expansion project that was completed in 2005, WCP installed a 8.64-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system on the southwest-facing roof of the stage house.
This site was deemed an excellent one for a solar installation. Because WCP is a year-round home for plays and performing arts and offers programs for children and young adults, it makes an ideal location to generate awareness and interest in renewable energy technologies.
By having a visible solar PV system on its roof, WCP sets an example of the potential that lies in solar electricity – to help us clean up the environment, stabilize and support the electricity grid in times of peak demand, and become less reliant on foreign energy sources.
