Collaboration Leads to Project Expansion
The town of Portland and Valley View School were wise to work together to expand their solar array. Through CCEF’s Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program, the town of Portland earned a CCEF-provided 5-kilowatt solar array, which it decided to locate at Valley View School. By accessing grant funds through CCEF’s On-Site Renewable Distributed Generation Program, Valley View School was then cost-effectively able to double the size of that solar PV system – to 10 kW. This marked the first time that a municipality augmented a system earned through the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program by utilizing other CCEF incentives.
By collaborating in this way and accessing support through two CCEF programs, the town and school benefitted from the reduced incremental costs associated with expanding their solar array; they leveraged the town’s earned solar array into a much larger system at a very reasonable cost.
The solar installation at Valley View School consists of 52 roof-mounted solar panels, which together supply over 5 percent of the school’s energy needs.
