Lufkin Rink Solar Panels Teach Sustainability
Benefiting the entire campus and bringing an immediate cost savings to the school, the SunPower photovoltaic system on the roof of Lufkin Rink at Rumsey Hall School demonstrates a continued commitment to a sustainable environment by the school. The solar PV project was part of the planning and building of the 35,211 square foot Lufkin Rink, which is home to Rumsey’s ice hockey teams.
The solar installation was made possible, in part, by a grant of $716,127 from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, which defrayed more than half of the total cost of the system. The balance of the cost for the system was subsidized by generous private gifts and a substantial restricted pledge from members of the school’s Board of Trustees.
The School’s utility bills will be cut an estimated $30,000 as the 238,442 kWh generated by the PV system is consumed on site at Rumsey Hall School. Over the life of the system, 6,300,500 pounds of C02 emissions will be avoided; the environmental benefit is akin to planting 30,000 trees.
Rumsey Hall School participates in other campus-wide “green” efforts including paper and plastics recycling, minimizing the use of non-biodegradable materials in the dining hall, and supporting local and organic farmers and food sources.
