A High Performance School
New Canaan Country School, an independent school for pre-kindergarten through grade nine, supports and teaches the principles of sustainability. During a recent renovation and expansion of the Stevens Upper School Building, which houses academic classrooms for grades seven through nine, a CCEF-supported rooftop solar PV system was installed. The 27.63-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system is an excellent example of incorporating solar PV into a high performance school building. The LEED-registered project also includes designs and systems that emphasize energy and water efficiency as well as materials conservation. Additionally, the building features high efficiency windows, countertops made from recycled bottles and solar electric panels for corridor lighting.
In addition to providing power during the peak demand periods in the congested Southwest Connecticut zone, the facility helps teach hundreds of young people about renewable energy technology and sustainability.
