Retailer with Significant Commitment to Solar
The specialty department store Kohl’s strives to be a leading green retailer. In fact, it is now implementing one of the largest distributed solar energy programs in the world among retailers. Kohl’s has made the commitment to install solar energy systems at more than 50 of its locations in Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey. These systems are expected to generate about 30 percent of the stores’ required annual electricity.
The 276.48-kilowatt solar array at the Rocky Hill store, completed in August of 2008, was among the first of the planned East Coast solar arrays to be completed. Installed by SunEdison, the system consists of 1,536 solar panels, and is expected to generate over 316,000 kiloWatt hours in its first year of service.
Kohl's has implemented a number of eco-friendly initiatives at stores across the country and has been recognized for its efforts. In 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) named Kohl's as its Green Power Partner of the Year for its commitment to renewable energy and on-site generation. Additionally, the United States Green Building Council has certified 46 Kohl's locations in its LEED green building program and 298 Kohl's stores have earn the EPA's ENERGY STAR label for superior energy efficiency.
