Sporting Solar
Newtown Youth Academy, a not-for-profit, community-centered organization which operates a state-of-the-art, multi-sport facility in the center of town, is doing all that it can to be “green.” Most of its furniture has been manufactured from recycling materials; automatic sinks and low-flush toilets have been installed to conserve water; and a 268.40-kW solar PV system has been placed on the south-facing roof of the facility to generate clean energy. Consisting of 880 solar panels, Newtown Youth Academy’s solar array supplies about 30 percent of the building’s electricity.
The academy is seeking LEED certification for this sports complex, the national benchmark for sustainable building and development practices.
