A Leader in Environmental Awareness
One of the first municipalities to become a Connecticut Clean Energy Community, Mansfield, expanded its commitment to clean energy in 2008 by installing a solar PV system at Mansfield Community Center, a health, fitness, educational and recreational resource for the region.
During the building’s initial construction in 2003, town leaders had to give up their plans to deploy solar due to construction costs. However, in 2007 they arrived at a plan to install a 98-kilowatt solar PV system at the center at no upfront cost to Mansfield residents. Under that plan, part of the system cost would be paid for by a grant from the CCEF and the balance would be covered under a 20-year solar power services agreement with SunEdison, one of North America’s largest solar energy services providers. The agreement called for SunEdison to finance, install, maintain and monitor the system. In return, Mansfield agreed to purchase the system’s solar electricity from SunEdison at long-term predictable prices, lower than utility rates. This was, and continues to be,a “win-win” collaboration.
By partnering with CCEF and SunEdison, the town of Mansfield is saving on utility costs and at the same time doing what’s right for the community and the environment.
