Diverse Portfolio of Clean Energy Fuels Fairfield
Fairfield has been a leader in its commitment to use clean energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2005, the town was the first in Fairfield County to commit to purchasing 20 percent clean energy for its municipal facilities by the year 2010. Later that year, it earned a 2-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund after becoming a Connecticut Clean Energy Community; that system is now installed at Fairfield Woods Middle School. The town also has installed microturbines and a 200-kilowatt fuel cell at the Fairfield Water Pollution Control Authority. The fuel cell provides combined heat and power to the wastewater treatment plant.
Fairfield continues to be a supporter of clean energy, having discussed or made plans to install additional on-site clean energy systems at municipal facilities – including solar, wind and fuel cell systems.
