Solar: the Right Thing to Do
The addition of solar panels to the rooftop of Crystal Rock’s bottling facility in 2008 was the company’s latest effort to reduce its energy footprint and improve its operating efficiency. According to the CEO of Vermont Pure Holdings, Ltd., the parent of Crystal Rock, this solar installation was also the company’s largest capital investment in its continuing effort to be a more environmentally friendly corporate citizen.
The CCEF-supported solar array at Crystal Rock consists of 1,661 solar panels. These now supply about 28% of the total electrical needs of the company’s Watertown facility. In addition, when the facility does not need electricity – when it is closed on weekends and holidays – Crystal Rock can supply and “sell” that electricity to the grid at the retail rate. The array, therefore, serves as a renewable power source for both Crystal Rock and the state of Connecticut.
Crystal Rock has also undertaken lighting and energy efficiency projects and instituted no-idle policies, and it continues to research and experiment with biodiesel and other fuel additives for fleet vehicles.
