Teaching the Teachers
CCEF has begun an ambitious effort to train teachers in solar energy education. Cities and towns that have committed to 20% clean energy by 2010 are eligible to send up to two teachers to workshops focused on solar energy education at the 9th grade level.
The Learning for Clean Energy Innovation (LCEI) initiative started with a group of eight volunteer science teachers in Glastonbury, Milford, and West Hartford and is gradually being rolled out to other cities and towns. The ultimate goal is to use monitoring software linked to solar panels on schools and other buildings to collect operating data for students to analyze. Lessons will link together energy conservation, electricity, and solar energy.
The solar energy lessons are aligned with the Connecticut Core Science Curriculum Framework and will serve as alternative lessons for the Energy Transformations module of the 9th grade standards. The Solar Education Unit was developed with the support of the Department of Education, a working group consisting of experts from the education field in Connecticut, and an education consultant.
The Next Workshop Training - Solar and Wind
The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund would like to invite science teachers working with the 9th grade science frameworks to participate our summer workshop series for solar and wind, hosted by PIMMS. For complete information please download the application form here or www.wesleyan.edu/pimms.
